JOB DESCRIPTION
The Shelter Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Humane Society Dawson (HSD) Animal Shelter. This role includes overseeing animal care, supervising staff, managing volunteers, and coordinating various shelter activities. The Shelter Coordinator ensures a positive, clean, safe, and healthy environment for employees, volunteers, visitors, and animals. Additionally, this position plays a vital role in promoting HSD’s mandate through community outreach efforts.

JOB DETAILS

  • Initially for a 6-month term with a possibility of permanent (includes a 3-month probationary period)
  • Hours: 6 hours/day, 5 days/week
  • Wage: Starting at $28/hour, with possibility of a raise to $30/hr after the probation period
  • Start Date Negotiable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for ensuring proper care and maintenance of animals while they are in the shelter, including feeding, exercising, organizing vet appointments and transport, administering medicine and cleaning kennels
  • Hire, train and supervise shelter staff and volunteers including setting work schedules/keeping time records, managing Facebook volunteer page and calendar, and assigning tasks and duties
  • Coordinate and implement fundraising events
  • Promote humane education and animal care to the community
  • Maintain records of animal intakes and statistics
  • Follow Humane Society Dawson policies
  • Attend monthly Board meetings
  • Ensure the general upkeep of shelter and yard
  • Administrative tasks include welcoming visitors; answering the phone; answering emails for different queries; managing website; writing animal bios for their adoption; following up on adopted animals; reading animals applications and calling references of applicants to make an informed decision; managing social media (posting our animals, interacting with the community, answering messages, posting educational content).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to Work Independently: Demonstrated initiative and self-motivation
  • Public Interaction Skills: Comfortable engaging and assisting the public, serving as an advocate for responsible animal ownership.
  • Public Relations and Management Knowledge: Understanding of public relations strategies and staff management practices.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Office and electronic record-keeping systems.
  • Digital Skills: Experience with website maintenance and managing social media platforms, particularly Facebook.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interactions.
  • Reliability: Dependable and accountable in fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a team and with a volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal abilities to build and maintain positive relationships.
  • Transportation: Reliable personal transportation is required, as the workplace is a 5-minute drive from town.
  • Cash Handling Experience: Previous experience in handling cash transactions is preferred.
  • Flexible Availability: Willingness to work somewhat flexible hours to meet job demands.
  • Physical Capability: Ability to lift up to 70 lbs as needed.
  • First Aid Certification: Recommended but not required.
